Human beings are the most intelligent life forms in the known universe. We are the most accomplished and blessed with strength, form, intelligence, cleverness, cunningness, common sense, self awareness et al. Why is it so? In the millions of years of evolution why did this (known) universe hit upon such a successful species ever to have roamed?
We have explored the earth, sea, sky, space and know a lot about a lot. There are still many things we know that needs exploration. Some of them like , diseases – similar to MND, new viruses, bacteria, species that crop up at regular intervals. We do know that these need to be conquered.
When watching a space program on National Geographic, my 12 year old asked me as to why we are the most intelligent species and why are we here? For her it was curiosity, to me it was a complex question which did not have easy explanation.
Thinking and reading more about what makes universe and the living beings go round, it appears the immense electrical energy all around us and within us. The universe is filled with it, so are all the living beings including humans as well. It’s the same electrical energy that flows through our(including all living animals) nerves, brain and spinal cord that also pervades this vast known universe. Within us, could it be in the atma/soul/inner consciousness that has been referred to from time immemorial?
Perhaps the answer to the “purpose” lies in the fact that we need to explore the unknowns passing on knowledge right from the ancient science to all that we have accomplished using modern science. As we accumulate this vast knowledge and move on many 100s of years from now, we might have achieved our purpose and get ready for the next bigger purpose! So, could it just be a journey and we achieve purposes along the way, only for it to turn to “duty” on hindsight? The answer for this might lie in the vast expanse of the universe. While doing so we definitely would have conquered the now in conquerable diseases, viruses, bacteria et al which inhibit human progression in the quest for knowledge and purpose.
To me, the purpose of life, post diagnosis of MND is to work towards finding a cure to this dreaded disease. This will be my duty to the folks who get diagnosed with MND in the future. I’m sure this is a small step towards achieving greater purposes of human kind.
Great post π
